The Pedestrian is an story written by Ray Bradbury. In this science fiction story that takes place in a futuristic society, he critiques how humans have stopped living and appreciating nature by being addicted to technology. Ray include hyperbole and similes in order to help the reader have a better understanding of the story. Could humans get to the point of being prisoners of technology?
"He was alone in this world of 2053" Ray Bradbury chose this futuristic time period for his story to take place, in which he included new types of technologies. One of the most mentioned and clear example of the futuristic technology he included is the automatic police car, when the main character was walking down in the streets one of these cars appeared. "A metallic voice called to him..." "The police of course.." Besides, the humanity has been addicted to this new type of TV and has quit to the daily routines.
Ray included similes in his story explaining this city the pedestrian was living on. With this similes he help the reader get into this society. For example, "But now this highways, too, were like streams in a dry season..." With this quote the author cause an image in the audience of this isolated city. Including similes like the one mentioned above he help the story and the setting be more clear.
Besides similes Bradbury also used another type of narrative techniques. He also uses hyperbole. Which means he exaggerate in some ways, but with this technique the emotions that the descriptions cause are greater. "During the day it was a thunderous surge of cars...". With this quote, like the ones using similes, he helps the reader get a clear image of the setting. Using this narrative technique Ray encourage the reader to imagine the setting the way he want to, in a more impressive way.
As main topic the author mentions how people have stopped living by being addicted to technology, technology is like a new prison. In the story the main character, Leonard, liked to take daily walks, in the description Ray mentions how everybody is locked in their houses watching what the pedestrian considered to be stupid TV Shows. Leonard appreciated nature and consider it as his normal routine, but when the automatic police car saw him, he was taken to jail, in which apparently, he will be forced to watch TV as the rest of the society. Could this be possible in a future?
In conclusion I like this story because it talk about the future and how the technology can affect our society and all the things that surround us. We can miss a lot of moments only for being addicted to technology. I hope we all can think about the damage we can make for being prisoners of technology. But the technology have their good things because without it we don't have a big resource for investigation and it facilitated the communication.
